Phone exposed to water? Do these things first.
The first few decisions matter more than trying dozens of home fixes. Here is a practical checklist for rain, spills, pools and salt-water exposure—and the warning signs that need professional assessment.
Switch it off and disconnect everything.
Remove the charging cable, headphones and other connected accessories. If the phone is operating normally and can be switched off safely, turn it off. Remove the case, wipe the outside with a clean dry cloth and keep the charging port facing down so trapped liquid can drain naturally.
Do not use rice, heat or compressed air.
Rice cannot clean minerals, salt or sugary residue from inside the device. Hair dryers and heaters can damage adhesives, seals, displays and batteries. Compressed air can push liquid further into the phone. Leave it in a dry, ventilated place and avoid pressing buttons repeatedly to “check” whether it still works.
Salt water and sugary drinks create extra risk.
Pool water, sea water, soft drink and coffee can leave conductive or corrosive residue behind. Even if the phone turns on after drying, that contamination may continue affecting the charging port, display connectors, cameras, speakers or other components.
Water resistance is also not permanent. Drops, frame damage, age, worn seals and previous repairs can all change how well a phone resists liquid.
Arrange an assessment when symptoms appear—or the exposure was significant.
Seek advice if the phone was submerged, exposed to salt water, will not start, displays a moisture warning for an extended period, becomes hot, drains quickly or develops problems with charging, sound, cameras, buttons, touch response or the display.
- Do not cable-charge a wet or unusually hot phone
- Back up important data once it is safe and stable enough to do so
- Tell the technician what liquid was involved and how long ago it happened
- Do not assume a working phone is free from internal contamination

Should I put a wet phone in rice?+
No. Rice does not remove contamination from inside a phone and particles can enter the charging port. Switch the phone off, disconnect accessories and allow it to dry in a ventilated place while arranging advice.
Can I charge a phone after it gets wet?+
Avoid cable charging until the phone and connector are dry and any moisture warning has cleared. If the phone was submerged, exposed to salt water or becomes hot, arrange an assessment before charging it again.
Is a water-resistant phone waterproof?+
No. Water resistance can reduce with age, impact damage, repairs and normal wear. It should not be treated as a guarantee against liquid damage.
Can phone water damage get worse later?+
Yes. Corrosion and residue may continue affecting connectors and components after the outside appears dry. New charging, screen, sound, camera or battery symptoms should be assessed.
