When does an iPhone screen need repair?

Not every crack is an emergency, but damaged glass and display faults can get worse quickly. Here is how to decide whether to book an iPhone screen repair and what to expect before you do.

Book a repair if the glass is cracked, lifting or sharp.

A crack may begin as a cosmetic issue, but the glass can spread or lift after everyday use. Once the surface feels sharp, flakes away, or has a gap near the edge of the display, it is worth getting it assessed. A damaged screen can also make the device more vulnerable to dust and moisture.

Simple rule of thumb:If you can feel the damage, see lines in the display, or the touch response has changed, arrange an assessment.

Display and touch faults are signs it is more than a surface crack.

Screen damage is not always obvious. You may need a replacement or diagnostic assessment if the screen flickers, has black spots, coloured lines, dead pixels, a blank section, delayed touch response, or ghost touches. These faults can appear after a drop even when the front glass looks mostly intact.

  • Touch does not respond in certain areas
  • The display flashes, shows lines or changes colour
  • There are black ink-like patches beneath the glass
  • Face ID, the front camera or the earpiece works differently after a drop

Not every post-drop fault is caused by the screen alone. A technician can check the device and explain whether the repair is limited to the display or whether another issue needs attention.

Before you bring your iPhone in.

Back up the phone if it still works, keep your passcode available, and make a note of any issues you have noticed since the damage happened. You do not need to diagnose it yourself; that information simply helps the assessment start in the right place.

At Essential Tech Repairs, we explain the available part options and confirm the total before work begins. Most common iPhone screen repairs with stocked parts can be completed the same day. Eligible repair parts are covered by a 12-month warranty.

made clearer.

Can I keep using an iPhone with a cracked screen?+

A small cosmetic crack may not stop the phone immediately, but cracks can spread, expose sharp glass and reduce protection against dust or moisture. If touch, display quality or the glass is affected, it is sensible to arrange an assessment sooner rather than later.

Will a screen repair fix touch problems?+

If the display or touch layer is the source of the fault, replacing the screen can resolve the problem. A technician should first check for signs of frame damage, liquid damage or a deeper fault so the right repair is quoted.

How long does an iPhone screen repair take?+

Most common iPhone screen repairs with a stocked part can be completed the same day. If a part needs to be ordered, overnight shipping is often available so fitting can usually happen the following day.
