Phone repair guide · Sunshine Coast

Phone not charging? Check these seven things first.

A charging problem does not always mean the port needs replacing. These practical checks can help identify a simple accessory problem—and show when it is time to stop troubleshooting and book an assessment.

1. Try a known-good cable and power adapter.

Cables fail more often than many people expect. Test the phone with a cable and adapter that successfully charge another compatible device. If possible, also try a different wall outlet. Avoid repeatedly reconnecting a visibly damaged or unusually hot cable.

2. Remove the case and check that the connector fits fully.

A thick or damaged case can prevent the connector from seating properly. Remove the case, reconnect the cable gently and check whether the plug sits firmly. If it feels loose or only works at an angle, do not force it.

3. Look for lint or debris in the charging port.

Pocket lint can compact at the back of the port and stop the connector reaching its proper position. Do not use a metal pin, liquid cleaner or excessive force: the contacts inside the port are easily damaged. Essential Tech Repairs offers a free charging-port clean when debris is the problem.

A common clue:The cable appears connected but does not click or sit as deeply as it used to.

4. Check for moisture or corrosion warnings.

Many phones pause wired charging when moisture is detected. Disconnect the cable and allow the device and connector to dry naturally in a ventilated place. Do not use heat, compressed air or rice. A phone exposed to salt water, drinks or prolonged moisture should be inspected because corrosion can continue after the surface appears dry.

5. Restart the phone and check its charging status.

A stalled process or software fault can occasionally interfere with charging indicators. Restart the phone, reconnect a known-good charger and watch whether the battery symbol changes. If the percentage does not increase, the phone repeatedly reconnects, or charging is extremely slow, the issue may be hardware-related.

6. Test wireless charging if the model supports it.

If wireless charging works but the cable does not, the fault is more likely to involve the cable, adapter or wired charging system. This is a useful diagnostic clue, but it does not confirm that the port itself is the only faulty component.

7. Stop and arrange an assessment when there is heat, swelling or physical damage.

Disconnect the phone if it becomes unusually hot, smells different, has a lifting screen or back cover, or shows visible damage around the port. These symptoms can point to a battery or electrical problem. Do not continue testing different chargers until the device has been inspected.

A proper assessment separates a simple clean from a worn port, battery fault, charging-circuit problem or liquid damage. We confirm the fault, available part options, turnaround and total before repair work begins. Eligible repair parts include a 12-month warranty.

Common questions

Charging problems,
made clearer.

Why does my phone only charge when the cable is held at an angle?+

This can be caused by compacted lint, a worn cable or physical damage inside the charging port. Stop forcing the connector, try a known-good cable and arrange an inspection if the connection remains loose or intermittent.

Can a phone charging port be cleaned without replacing it?+

Sometimes. Pocket lint and debris can stop a cable seating properly, and a careful professional clean may restore the connection. If the port is worn, corroded or physically damaged, a repair may still be required.

How long does a phone charging repair take?+

Timing depends on the phone model and the confirmed fault. Repairs with a stocked part can often be completed the same day. If a part needs to be ordered, overnight shipping is commonly available before fitting the following day.

Should I keep charging a phone that becomes very hot?+

Disconnect it and stop using that charger. Unusual heat, swelling, odour or visible damage can indicate a battery or electrical problem and should be assessed before the phone is charged again.
